Summary
Junior career
-Nile started gymnastics at 4 years old at Pudesy Leisure Centre in Leeds. Soon he was promoted and started training at Leeds gymnastics club because he was really talented.
He became British capion under 12 years.
At 16 years old he competed at Junior european championships in Montpellier, 2012, and he was too focues on outcomes and results, but he fixed that 2 years later in Sofia, Bulgaria, when he was 18 and he was enjoying the process more. National team coach was Baz Collie.
Early senior career
His first senior competition was Commonwealth games in 2014 in Glasgow, and he finished 3rd in all around.
Also, he was selected for the GB team for World Championships in 2014 in China, and after that he was part of the team at World Championships 2015 in Glasgow when team GB won silver and qualified for the Rio Olympics in 2016.
Senior Career
One of the biggest, if not the biggest achievement of his career is most certainly bronze medal on high bar at Rio Olympics 2016. He says that he was so nervous about that, but when the moment of the final came, he went there and smashed his routine.
He was partying after that a lot and it took him a long time till he got back to full training again.
Also, arund that time, he started having problems with addictions, and one of the first was gambling addiction. He was spending so much money on that and couldn’t control himself, and after that, alcohol added up with that.
At the beginning of 2017 he snapped ligaments in his ankle and was recovering most of the 2017 but he competed at World Championships 2017 and made it to the High bar final.
His peak, but unfortunately the beginning of the end was 2018. At Commonwealth games 2018 he made huge success, he won team gold, all around gold, high bar gold and silver on rings and parallel bars.
It takes some time to realise that Commonwealth games 2018 was Nile’s last big competition.
After that he struggled a lot with injuries and had a lot of unlucky moments.
He missed 2018 european and world championships, and the same repeated in 2019.
When he got back a bit, in 2020., started training better and was trying to make a team for Tokyo olympics, he got neck problems and had to stop training again.
He had also some problems in the club so he had to leave Leeds and join Manchester.
At the beginning of 2021., january 14, he announced his retiretment from competitive gymnastics, but as he said, he is not done with gymnastics at all.
Business
In 2019 he started and opened his first gymnastics club, Nile Wilson Gymnastics, but that was not the first of his businesses.
He is very popular on YouTube, where the start of his popularity was in 2017, thanks to videos “The ultimate gymnastics challenge”, and that was just the beginning of his business journies and it is base and marketing channel for other businesses.
Other things he is doing is NW Bodybible, and NW Clothing.
Future
Nile believes that in future gymnastics should change some things to gain more traction because it is very easy to do with gymnastics.
Also, regarding coaching, the future of gymnastics coaching and gymnastics is that every person who walks into gymnastics gym is special and valueable and should have fun and enjoy their time there. And Nile is alredy implementing that in his club already.
The biggest lessons
The biggest lessons from Nile Wilson:
- Enjoy the process more than you focus on results
- How to deal with anxiety – you have to face it and deal with it to solve it
- Don’t define yourself by what you do, you are much more than that
